Southern California, Orange County Area
« on: September 23, 2012, 03:32:42 PM »
I've been riding down here for about 2 years in an abandoned Boeing parking lot (have passive permission from the guards!).

I've recently found myself on a more familiar and popular bike, which lends me access to a broad audience of fellow SV riders where I'm going to post and hopefully start to draw some attention and to set up some meet and greets.

But, a SoCal chapter of moto Gymkhana is something that I'm very interested in starting up.

Welcome G-Dog.  The best thing you can do is take a look at:

How to get started in Gymkhana in your state

This is a quick outline to help us determine who is REALLY interested starting a chapter VS. who just wants to see one started.  As I have told several applicants before - we want to see what you can do on your own before we start helping you - If you show real interest and ability to organize, we will give as much help as you need.  Otherwise you are just an enthusiast.

The best single thing anyone can do is find 4-5 people that share an interest, and get together in a safe space to practice a bit.  If this is not possible, keep an eye out for someone close by that can, and join them.

I hope to see something from you soon.

Learn to ride better before your riding days are cut short.

Hey there GymkhanaDog, I'm in the L.A. area and have been looking into this recently.  I'm pretty new and am pretty bad at low-speed stuff but hey, gotta start somewhere eh?  Feel free to send me a PM and we can take it from there.

"If you build it, they will come."

I've been autocrossing for over 20 years in SoCal. http://www.solo2.com/

I have been an on-and-off moto enthusiast.
I would LOVE to do gymkhana on a bike.
PM me if you want to get in touch with some of my auto cross buddies about event organization.
You can rent The CA speedway parking lots, Willow Springs kart track or balcony parking lot, Buttonwillow raceway kart track, etc.

Hope you guys manage to get something going in SoCal as it would give me a good excuse to come over for a visit! It's probably way warmer there than it is in England. 8)

Warmer weather for sure, Motogymkhanaman, year-round riding weather too!

Hey JK, I'd love to get something more regular put together locally.  At the moment, my fiance and I have about 1 hour to play around in the community college's parking lot before we get chased off; not an ideal way to practice.  Taking a look at solo2.com now.

The Autocross people would be an ideal contact as they do almost exactly the same stuff as we do. They will no doubt have a list of sites that you could use or tag on to one of their car events.

I think the challenge now is mostly finding a spot that we can actually practice.  After checking in with JK and then calling a couple of places like the Rosebowl (which is close to me), renting out a parking lot is great for an actual event where we can get a bunch of people in at the same time, but for regular practing the cost is pretty hefty.

Alfrodri, what area are you gonna be in when you transfer back state-side?  If you've done some in Japan I'd love to pick your brain on what you've learned.

Welcome Dog! As many motorcycles there are in SoCal you should not have a problem!
