What motorcycle do you ride?
« on: December 20, 2013, 04:13:04 PM »
I know that any bike is welcome and should not be underestimated but I am curious as to what bike(s) do you guys use for these events?

 I am riding a 2013 FJR

The selection of bikes in the UK Moto Gymkhana events runs from little 50cc automatic scooters right through to big cruisers and sports bikes. The most popular machines tend to be the Fazer, Hornet and Bandit 600's with a sprinkling of ex riding school 500 twins. There are more and more Supermoto's coming along now and we see quite a few DRZ's and KTM's in the line-up.

As our Japanese friends say, "it is the rider not the bike that is being challenged" so it really doesn't matter what people ride.

I ride a KLR 650, a VStrom 1000, and a big Suzuki 1500 cruiser with bags.
When asked what the best bike to ride at gymkhana is, I usually respond with a variation of:
"Bring the bike that you RIDE -you will realize how little you know about riding it, and you will leave riding it better."
Learn to ride better before your riding days are cut short.

I ride a 650 Vstrom and it feels like a GL1800 when I'm trying to hit my marks.  Shesh!  What a boat.  I sold my wing to buy the strom but I can only imagine trying to drag a wing around the GP8s.

Suzuki DL650 V-Strom.

Okey, it does sound like a tractor and it IS bigger than many bikes out there but ... I recently met a guy who drives a big ADV GS (1200 cc) and even though the bike is a bit bigger than the Strom, he controls it like it is a small naked bike (i.e. CBF 600). I admit that - in comparison - GS is smoother than the Strom, but considering the price - it should be. Don't know the prices in the US, but the new Strom in Croatia costs around 10k $ and the new GS costs around 26k $. Go figure.

My strom is the best bike I've ever owned and I will never get rid of it.  I am really enjoying this Little bike and the zip that it has is all I need to rip and run as fast as I dare.  Is it pretty?  Probably not to other people.  Is it fast?  Fast enough to kill me.  Is is smooth and sweet as the last time my baby wisked me away to racer bike land?  You better believe it!  Do I wish my strom was a little smoother?  Sure, but it's still mine and I love it.  Let ride!

I have been to 3 Gymkhanas and ridden a different bike every time.

Aprilia Sport City 250

Kawasaki Versys650 which I can't find a pic of from the Gymkhana.

Kymco Super 8 150.  This bike is a real cheater it's so easy to ride around the cones.

Love that head turn!  You could be an instructor.  :)
